Her idea was to create a high performance, fashionable sweatband for running and sports that wraps around your hand allowing you to use both sides to wipe and wick away sweat from your eyes, neck or forehead and nasal drip from your nose. You can read more about Katie's SJS journey and the developing of the Handana here. The creator of the Handana is a I wore the Handana for a Father's Day 5k and it was great being able to wipe the sweat off my face with the back of my hand, and have it actually be absorbent! This week I had a chance to go check out the soon-to-open Rise Bakery in Adams Morgan, Washington, DC. This bakery is 100% Gluten-free and will also have vegan offerings! I was able to taste some delicious samples of some of the products that will be offered. Above is some melt-in-your-mouth cake. I've already decided that this is where I want to get my birthday cake from this year! There were some still-warm cookies that tasted AMAZING! I know I am so far removed from the gluten-filled world, but even my niece thought they were delicious! I also got to try this chocolate cupcake, which was also very tasty. I can't wait for this bakery to open! They are still working on outfitting the kitchen and getting set up, so there is no exact opening date, but I will keep you posted on when it will open!
In the meantime, please like them on facebook and twitter so you can see what they are up to! Both gluten-free and gluten-eating people will love this bakery! The first week of summer is here! And it was a very busy one, which is a good thing because I remember last year's first week and I was so bored and overwhelmed! Not this year. I started the summer off with a lot planned! Friday was National Flip Flop Day and Nathan and I celebrated with pedicures a free smoothies at Tropical Smoothie! Saturday morning brought a 4.5 mile run with Marty and Madre, and then grocery shopping at Wegmans for some grocery shopping. Saturday evening was Nathan's Birthday Party. The party was "cartoon" themed and we invited some friends over for a cookout. We even dressed up for the occasion :) Everyone had a good time at the party, including Maestro and Alice. On Sunday morning I went to a Boot Camp style workout that I had won a registration to. You can read about my experience here! Monday and Tuesday were spent at the pool swimming and relaxing with my mom, sister-in-law, and 2 nieces. I did some water running and lap workouts to help prepare me for my first triathlon in August. I think I will be ok with the swim part! On Monday evening I headed up to Adams Morgan in Washington, D.C. to check out an soon-to-be opened bakery. What makes this bakery special is that it is gluten-free!!! Yay! Rise Gluten Free Bakery will be opening this summer, and I can't wait. I had the opportunity to taste a few gluten-free/vegan items, and I was very impressed. Keep an eye out for update posts on this awesome, new addition to DC! It has been a fun summer so far, and I am excited for what else I have planned!!!
I woke up Saturday morning and it was such a dreary and drizzly day. But I still put on my sparkle and went out for my run. I went out with Madre and Marty and ended up completing 4.5 miles, all with negative splits. I used intervals 2:1, but sped up faster as I ran.
I had won a free registration to the Fit Foodie Boot Camp at the Mosaic District in Fairfax, VA. I have never really done boot camp before, so I was excited and a little nervous to try it out. I got there a bit early and figured out where to go. The boot camp was to take place at the top of a parking garage. Below you can see the view that we had. There were lots of different circuit activities that were set up for us to do. We had to find a partner with whom we would travel around with. Before we started the circuit, we had to do our warm-up with consisted of various types of jogging and racing around. I was pretty worn out after just the warm-up! Then we began our circuits. There were such things as bicep curls, wall sits, ladder jumps, jump roping, high jumps, kettle ball throws, sit ups, hurdle jumps, and more. We did the circuit twice, with some suicide running in between. It was a great workout and I was definitely sore the next day. I don't know if it is something that I will make a part of my regular routine though because I am pretty lazy. When I started to get tired, I stopped pushing myself to work as hard as I could, which I think defeats the purpose. But it was a good time, and I am glad that I went. After the boot camp, I had a little time to walk around the farmer's market. I found some fried plantains that I could eat. It came with some Oh Mercy Hot Sauce that was really hot, but tasted especially good with the plantains.
It's the last week of school HOORAY!!! I am VERY ready for summer, but it does not feel like it is the end of the school year. On Friday I took a walk at Raflo Park and then attended an event at the Well & Good Studio in Leesburg, VA. I had a great time exploring products and meeting new people. Sunday morning brought a Father's Day 5k with Maestro. It was such a beautiful day and a pleasant run! We celebrated Father's Day with Marty. Here he is with his Disney gear that he got! On Monday I went to the pool for the first time of the season. I can't wait until next week when I can go all the time! There are still a few days for my Runningluv giveaway. Check out my review and enter to win!
Sunday morning Maestro and I headed out to scenic Burke Lake Park for a Father's Day 5k. I love this park and enjoy when I have races here. It was a good sized small race, with lots of families running with their dads. Along the way Maestro and I saw a turtle in the stream. It was a big one and I had to, of course, stop to take a few pictures. This also reminded me of why I am unlikely to ever win a place for being fast...I like to run and enjoy the scenery and take pictures when I want to! I met some ladies from MRTT and got a photo after the race :) It was a beautiful and gorgeous day. Not too hot (yet) and a lot of the race was in the shade. Half the course was trail and half was paved. Here I am about to cross the finish line. I felt good! I used an easy 2:1 interval pace and Maestro was able to do most of the run intervals. Maestro did pretty well too, though he looks tired in the picture. At the end is an uphill and then downhill and he wanted to run both.
If you are looking for a fun July race, check out the Metro Run Walk Sweatfest! They always put on a good race. **Disclaimer** runninGluv provided me with free product in exchange for my honest opinions in this review. When I discovered it, I knew I had to try it because it is just what I needed! How many times have you need a towel while you were running or working out and didn't have one? I know, for me, wiping off sweat with the back of my hand is NOT very effective! That's where runningluv comes in. Fashionable and functional, the runningluv wraps nicely around your hand or wrist when not needed. It then fully opens up into the softest towel ever! It is great for wiping off the sweat from your face and wiping your nose when it is running (let's leave job that for the feet!) I have taken my runningluv on two runs so far: a 3-mile short run and a half marathon race. It has been awesome both times. It is great to have a towel available to me with easy access to wipe my face off. It is much more absorbent than the back of my hand! My favorite part of the runningluv was getting it wet. During the half marathon I poured water on the towel at each water stop. This was awesome because it was hot outside and I liked being able to wipe my face and arms to cool off while running. This helped me feel more refreshed and kept me moving forward! The towel was also very handy at swatting away the gnats and flies that were sometimes coming at me. I think the runningluv is a great product. It is very useful while running and is comfortable to wear and use. It also comes in a lot of different color combinations, so you can match it to your personal style! Enter in for a chance to win your very own runningluv!!
A winner will be chosen on June 23. On Friday I attended an event at the Well & Good Studio in Leesburg, VA. I got to Leesburg super early because I left from work, and was happy to find this lovely park nearby. I had about an hour to spare, so I decided to take a walk down the W&OD path. It was a pretty tree-lined walk, and I enjoyed being out in the sun after being inside all day. I'm was pondering who I could convince to go on a bike ride with me on the W&OD path....Any takers????
