I woke up Saturday morning and it was such a dreary and drizzly day. But I still put on my sparkle and went out for my run. I went out with Madre and Marty and ended up completing 4.5 miles, all with negative splits. I used intervals 2:1, but sped up faster as I ran.
I had won a free registration to the Fit Foodie Boot Camp at the Mosaic District in Fairfax, VA. I have never really done boot camp before, so I was excited and a little nervous to try it out.
I got there a bit early and figured out where to go. The boot camp was to take place at the top of a parking garage. Below you can see the view that we had.
There were lots of different circuit activities that were set up for us to do. We had to find a partner with whom we would travel around with. Before we started the circuit, we had to do our warm-up with consisted of various types of jogging and racing around. I was pretty worn out after just the warm-up! Then we began our circuits. There were such things as bicep curls, wall sits, ladder jumps, jump roping, high jumps, kettle ball throws, sit ups, hurdle jumps, and more. We did the circuit twice, with some suicide running in between.
It was a great workout and I was definitely sore the next day. I don't know if it is something that I will make a part of my regular routine though because I am pretty lazy. When I started to get tired, I stopped pushing myself to work as hard as I could, which I think defeats the purpose. But it was a good time, and I am glad that I went.
After the boot camp, I had a little time to walk around the farmer's market. I found some fried plantains that I could eat. It came with some Oh Mercy Hot Sauce that was really hot, but tasted especially good with the plantains.
Wednesday was National Running Day! I joined up with Moms Run This Town for a group run and had a Poker Run. At the beginning of the run everyone received one card. As they passed me on the 5k route, they got another card, and at the finish line they got a final card. Combined with my two cards, they had to make their best poker hand. The winner had triple 4s! This run was a lot of fun, even though it was pretty humid out, and started to rain just as we were leaving.
Thanks to US Road Running for providing the Poker Run cards and medal, and thanks to MRTT and VA Runner for prizes and goodie bags!
How did you celebrate National Running Day? Comment and let me know!
Monday night I went out for a quick run. I ended up going through Prince William Forest Park before it got too dark because I wanted a more quiet run than just along the street. It was a pretty rough run because I had just taken a week off from being busy and being sick. It's amazing how much more tired you are after coming back from a break!
By the way, the towel I have is a runningluv. I will have a full review and giveaway next week, so check back!!!
My total miles for May included 62.66 running miles, 16.27 biking miles, and 32.83 walking miles. That is a total of 111.76 miles!!!!
I participated in these races:
Virtual Races: May Get Out and Run 5k, Get LOST in Running Station 7
5k - Mother's Helping Mothers 5k and Falcon 5k
10k - Joining Hearts for Heidi 10k
1/2 Marathon - Alexandria Running Festival and the Potomac River Run Half Marathon
I started out the month of May with the idea that I would do a 5k streak everyday. I only lasted for half of the month, and then life got in the way and laziness took over. It is so easy to miss a day and then get completely off track. It WAS pretty hard to do 5k every day, and should probably just focus on one mile if I start it again. I DID like getting exercise everyday, though!
For June, I have one half marathon, a few 5ks, and a 10k. It is hard to run when it is hot out!!! As soon as school is over, I plan on being at the pool a lot swimming laps and water running. I also need to pick up my bike from the shop and get in some more biking miles.
On Monday, Madre met me for a run to try out my new shoes. They are pretty comfortable so far, and I just hope that they stay that way. I hate shoe shopping and I hate not having comfortable shoes!
Tuesday was a busy day. My 8th graders had their orchestra concert, so I had to stay after school, set up, have a concert, and then tear down. By the time we got home, I was over-exhausted, so I skipped my streak and went straight to bed :( This was very upsetting to me, but there was no way I could complete a 5k that night.
So on Wednesday, I knew I had to make it up. It was a bit rainy, so I headed to the gym to run 10k on the treadmill. I used 2:1 intervals, with negative splits.
Mile 1 - 5.0 - 12 min/mi
Mile 2 - 5.2 - 11:32mm
Mile 3 - 5.4 - 11:07mm
Mile 4 - 5.6 - 10:43mm
Mile 5 - 5.8 - 10:21mm
Mile 6 - 6.0 - 10:00mm
Last .2 - 7.2 - 8:20mm
When walking, I walked a 4.0 pace (15 minute mile). I ended up finishing in 1:16:13, which is an average 12:09 pace. Not very fast, but it was HOT at the gym. They turned off the fans right after I started running, and I didn't see a worker until over halfway through my run. Finally the turned on the fans. UGH! Hot and sweaty with no wind in my face! But I finished and that is all that matters.
On Thursday, I went to National Harbor with Kendra for a Capital Wheel preview event. I fully intended to track my walking, but cell service was spotty and my battery was quickly draining. I had to turn off runkeeper so I would have juice left to take over a hundred pictures! (Stay tuned for my Capital Wheel post!!!) I was wearing very comfortable shoes, and did walk a lot - from the parking garage, to the restaurant, up and down the piers, etc....so I am going to count that as my Streak Day #22 and call it a day.
I didn't do much running this week because my legs are tired! But next week I will step it up because I have a half on Sunday!
On Wednesday, Bella, Maestro, and I went on a walk around the neighborhood. After we came home, they both promptly passed out. It was a nice workout.
On Thursday, I REALLY did not want to go workout. It was pretty much raining ALL day, so I had to go to the gym. I ended up cranking out 5.5 miles on the bike before quitting, and then did some arm weights.
Friday was a bit tricky. I went to bring Bella home, and then ended up going on a shopping spree. While Madre and Marty went into various stores (target x2 and the exchange), I stayed outside and walked around the parking lots. When I got home, I still had to do about 1.5 more miles, so Maestro and I trudged out in the misting rain and finished up.
Because of my 10k and 5k races this weekend, I kept my next workouts pretty easy. On Monday I went over to Madre's and dragged her on a walk. We walked around her neighborhood and saw a few frogs.
On Tuesday I was going to go on an easy run, but Nathan decided he didn't want to go. THEN I touched my eye after handling a bottle of the World's Hottest Hot Sauce. So I had to take out my contacts and wear my glasses, which are the incorrect prescription (because I only wear them for 10 minutes a day...) So I went to the gym and did a quick 4 miles on the bike before coming home. Get 'er done!
I'm hoping to take my bike into the shop to get tuned up so I can get some outside biking done!
Friday was streak Day #9. It was also a walk day as I ran Thursday and have races on both Saturday and Sunday. It was a busy day for me with meetings and rehearsal, do I had to break up my 5k into chunks.
My first bit was taking Maestro on a short walk before work. Then, when I got to work, Shylea and I went and walked the track for a little while before class started. My last segment was on a service road/trail that led to a ropes course by the Hylton Performing Arts Center. I had no idea that it was there, but the climbing thing was neat to see.
Even though I had to break up my 5k, I am glad I found a way to get all of my miles!
